How an ore is mined
An ore is a block. Breaking it leaves bedrock, and 8 seconds later a new ore appears in the same spot, drawn from the zone pool and filtered by your Miner level.
Your pickaxe's fortune multiplies everything that drops.

Random ores earn their name: they mostly give amethyst, and the fragment or shard is the reward you are after. Nether ores are far more generous, which is what justifies the prestige 20 requirement to get in.
⚠️ Pure onyx appears in no mine: it only comes out of the T3 generator. Zones only produce its random version.

An onyx ingot is therefore 81 shards. It is by far the most expensive material in the game, and a helmet needs 5 ingots, a chestplate 8.

Note that refining pays: 9 ruby fragments are worth $72 raw, but $76 once smelted into an ingot. Same for onyx, 9 shards at $126 against $130 for the fragment.
