Getting started in Skyblock on Minecraft Bedrock

Skyblock on Bedrock, solo or on a server: the first things to do on your island, the cobblestone generator, the farms that pay and the mistakes to avoid.

Floating islands with fir trees and hanging roots, in a purple sky

Skyblock is Minecraft with almost nothing. A tiny island in the void, a tree, a chest, and it's up to you to build everything. The mode was born in 2011 as a single-player map, and it became one of the most played server modes, on Java and on Bedrock.

This guide works for a solo map as well as a server. We'll say when things differ.

Your first ten minutes

  1. Don't chop the whole tree right away. Take the wood, but keep the saplings that drop from the leaves. No sapling, no more wood, ever.
  2. Replant the saplings away from the edge, on the island's dirt.
  3. Check your starting chest. Usually a lava bucket and some ice (or a water bucket). Whatever you do, don't lose them.
  4. Build safely. Sneak when you place blocks at the edge. One fall into the void and everything you carry is gone.

The cobblestone generator

This is the base of everything. When flowing lava touches flowing water, it creates cobblestone. Break it, and another one forms: infinite stone.

The simplest version:

  1. Dig a trench four blocks long and one block deep.
  2. On the third block, dig one block deeper: a small hole.
  3. Pour the lava into the first block, and the water into the fourth.
  4. The water falls into the hole and stops. The lava flows toward it, and the cobblestone forms on the second block.

If you get obsidian, the water touched the lava source. The hole is there to stop that: check that it's on the third block, on the water side.

On many servers, this generator is replaced by ore generators you can upgrade. Same idea: an endless source of blocks to mine.

The farms that matter

Once the stone is going, the whole game is about expanding the island and building farms:

  • crops (wheat, carrots, potatoes, sugar cane) for food and to sell;
  • trees, for wood and for the space they take in your layout;
  • mobs, with a dark platform away from the island, for bones, gunpowder and string;
  • fishing, slow but risk-free.

On a server, all of this sells at the shop or to other players. Your money is what grows your island.

Classic mistakes

  • Expanding too fast without railings. A two-thousand-block island is useless if you fall while building it.
  • Betting everything on one farm. If its shop price drops, you have nothing left.
  • Playing alone for too long. On a server, a team moves three times faster.

Skyblock on a server or solo?

Solo, you have all the time in the world, but you end up going in circles. On a server, there's an economy, an island ranking, events, and players to trade with. That's what keeps it fun.

Some servers go further and mix Skyblock and Factions: that's SkyFaction, the mode Linesia is built around. Your faction has its own safe island, and a warzone to fight in when it's ready.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a cobblestone generator on Bedrock?

Same as on Java: a four-block trench with a hole on the third block, lava at one end and water at the other. The water falls into the hole, the lava flows toward it, and the stone forms in between.

Can you play Skyblock with friends?

Yes, on a shared map with friends or on a server. On a server, each player or each team has their own island.

Does Skyblock work on phone and console?

Yes. Bedrock servers welcome phone, console and PC players together.
