Minecraft Bedrock lagging on a server? Here's what to do

Choppy image, blocks that reappear, hits that don't register: tell which kind of lag you have in Minecraft Bedrock and fix it on PC, phone and console.

"It's lagging" can mean three different things, and each one is fixed differently. Before you touch anything, figure out which one you have.

Which lag do you have?

The image stutters when you turn the camera. Your device can't draw the game fast enough: an FPS problem. It's the most common one on phones and older consoles.

The camera is smooth, but the world jumps around. Broken blocks that come back, players who teleport, hits that don't count. That's your connection: ping is too high or unstable.

Everyone complains in chat at the same time. Then it's the server slowing down. Nothing you can do except tell the staff.

If the image stutters (FPS)

In Settings, then Video:

  1. Render Distance: bring it down to 8 to 12 chunks. This is by far the setting that matters most.
  2. Fancy Graphics: turn it off.
  3. Smooth Lighting, Clouds, Beautiful Skies and Fancy Leaves: turn them off.
  4. If your game offers the new Vibrant Visuals mode, go back to the simple look. It asks a lot more from your device.
  5. Remove any heavy texture packs and shaders you added.

Lots of players in one place is where small devices struggle the most. Lower your render distance.

On phone

  • Close other apps, especially social media running in the background.
  • Turn off battery saver: it throttles the processor.
  • A phone that heats up slows itself down. Take off the case, avoid playing while charging.
  • Keep some free storage on your phone, at least 2 GB.

On PC

  • Plug your laptop in.
  • If you have a graphics card, make sure Minecraft uses it: Windows Settings, Display, Graphics, then pick Minecraft and High performance.
  • Update your graphics card drivers.

On console

  • On Switch, PS4 and Xbox One, a low render distance really makes a difference.
  • On Switch, the game runs a bit smoother docked than in handheld mode in busy areas.

If the world jumps (connection)

  • Move closer to the router or plug in a cable if your console or PC allows it.
  • On Wi-Fi, pick the 5 GHz network if your router has one: it's less crowded.
  • Pause downloads on the same network: console updates, 4K videos, game downloads.
  • Turn off your VPN. It almost always adds ping.
  • Try mobile data. If it's better, the problem is your router or your Wi-Fi.
  • Play on a server close to you. Ping shows next to the server name in the list. Under 60 ms feels smooth.

If it's the server

When everyone lags at the same time, the server is overloaded or has a problem. Tell the staff on the server's Discord, with the time and what you were doing. It helps them find the cause.

Linesia is hosted in Gravelines, northern France, so ping stays low across Europe. And if you lag, a ticket on Discord is all it takes: we'll look into it.

Frequently asked questions

What render distance should I use in Minecraft Bedrock?

Between 8 and 12 chunks on phone and console, up to 16 on a good PC. On a server, the server often caps the distance on its side, so going higher does nothing.

Why do I only lag on a server and not in single player?

Single player has no connection and less to draw. On a server, you have dozens of players, builds and your connection on top. Lower your render distance and check your ping.

What's a good ping in Minecraft?

Under 60 ms is great. Between 60 and 120 ms is playable. Over 150 ms, you'll feel the delay in fights.
